Golden Bay is one of Aotearoa’s most magical corners — a place where wild nature meets relaxed coastal living. Whether you’re here for a weekend escape or a longer holiday, there are some spots that simply shouldn’t be missed. Here are our top 5 must-see places to make your Golden Bay stay unforgettable.

1. Te Waikoropupū Springs (Pupu Springs)

Famous for their crystal-clear water, Te Waikoropupū Springs are one of the clearest freshwater springs in the world. A short walk through lush native bush brings you to viewing platforms where you can marvel at the shimmering blue-green water.

Tip: Visit in the morning for calm reflections and bring insect repellent.

Golden Bay’s most dramatic coastline! Wharariki Beach is a windswept paradise with caves, giant rock arches, and seal pups playing in the shallows. Nearby, Cape Farewell marks the northernmost point of the South Island.

Tip: The walk from the car park takes around 20 minutes — pack snacks and allow time to explore.

3. Farewell Spit Nature Reserve (Onetahua)

Stretching 34 km into the ocean, Farewell Spit is an ecological wonder, home to thousands of migratory birds and breathtaking dunes. Access is restricted, so joining a guided tour is recommended as the best way to experience its beauty while respecting conservation efforts.

Tip: Tours depend on the tides, so check schedules and book ahead.

For something truly unique, take the short but steep bush walk up to Rawhiti Cave. The limestone entrance is filled with incredible stalactites and moss-covered rock formations. It’s a little challenging, but the view into the cave is worth the climb.

Tip: Wear sturdy shoes — the track can get muddy.

Tip: Bring a picnic — there are spots near the river where you can relax before or after your walk.

Planning Your Visit

Golden Bay is best enjoyed at a slow pace — the roads are winding, and the scenery deserves to be taken in at a leisurely pace. Whether you base yourself in Takaka, Pohara, or Collingwood, you’ll find plenty of cafés, art galleries, and local markets to fill your days in between adventures.

Golden Bay is waiting for you — see you on the beach or the trail.
