Golden Bay's most magical spots are often only a short and easy walk away — perfect for the whole family, including small children. If you want to enjoy New Zealand's wondrous nature at a slower pace, we have the right track for you listed here.

The world-famous Pupu Springs are among the clearest in the world and one of Golden Bay's finest treasures. This short 20-minute loop track leads through lush native bush to viewing platforms over the water. Easily accessible, the boardwalk allows the whole family to enjoy the shimmering waters. Kids love it!

Tip: Bring insect repellent in warmer months.

Just minutes from Takaka, this short walk winds through dramatic limestone outcrops, nikau palms, and lush bush. The trail is flat and easy to maneuver. It leads to a small lookout with stunning views across Golden Bay's shores.

Tip: Ideal on a hot summer’s day — the track is shady and cool.

A quirky, family favourite. This network of limestone passages, located just outside Takaka, feels like a natural maze. Children love exploring the twists and turns, and locals often hide small figurines for kids to find.

Tip: Bring your sense of adventure and let the kids take the lead!

This short riverside track near Takaka is flat and peaceful, winding through native bush and limestone cliffs. In summer, you can combine your walk with a swim in the river.

Tip: Pack togs and a towel if you’re visiting on a warm day.

A slightly longer option (about 1 hour return), yet very family-friendly. The track follows along a small stream through lush forest. It crosses a fun swing bridge and finishes at a spectacular waterfall, which is a great reward. Kids love this fun and adventurous walk.

Tip: Along the track, the river provides some ideal spots for kids to splash and play — pack a change of clothes just in case.

Just a five-minute walk from the roadside carpark, this short track leads to a limestone outcrop. There you will find the Abel Tasman Monument and a viewing platform. From the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views over the Tata Islands and Ligar Bay — a perfect spot for family photos.

Tip: Stop here on your way to or from Totaranui — the views are some of the best in Golden Bay.

Near Collingwood, Milnthorpe is a network of flat walking tracks that wind through a mix of different forest types and even lead down to the beach. It’s a wonderful spot for families, with plenty of variety to keep kids engaged as you explore. Best of all, dogs are welcome, so don't forget your furry friends!

Tip: Pick up a map at the entrance to keep track of your location.

A short and easy track leads around the peaceful Kaihoka Lakes. These two freshwater lakes are nestled among limestone outcrops and native bush. The walk is gentle enough for children and offers plenty of opportunities to spot birdlife, enjoy reflections on the water, and take in the tranquil setting. It’s a bit of a drive from Collingwood, but the unique scenery makes it a worthwhile family outing.

Tip: The lakes are off the beaten track, so bring snacks, water, and maybe a picnic blanket — it’s a beautiful, quiet spot to stop for lunch. There are no facilities out there, so plan ahead before you leave Collingwood.

Why Easy Walks are Perfect for Families

Golden Bay is full of short tracks that make exploring nature fun and accessible. These walks don’t take long, but they open up worlds of caves, springs, waterfalls, and beaches - perfect for kids, grandparents, or anyone who wants to experience Golden Bay without a full-day tramp.
