There is no shop, no café and no through traffic — the road stops in the settlement — which is exactly why the same families come back to the same house every January. Golden Bay Kayaks operates from the beach itself, so guided trips and rentals start a few metres from the sand, and the Abel Tasman coastline begins around the corner. Because there is nothing to buy in the settlement, do a full shop in Tākaka on the way through and bring the chilly bin; most guests only leave for the Wainui Falls walk ten minutes away, or to drive back to Pōhara for dinner.
It is the beach most Golden Bay parents name first. The sand shelves gently, the islands take the swell out of anything from the north, and the shallows warm up quickly on an incoming tide. There are no lifeguards anywhere in Golden Bay, so the usual rules apply — and at low tide you will walk out a long way before it is deep enough to swim.

Pōhara is about eight minutes back around the coast for a meal or a coffee, and Tākaka is twenty minutes away for the supermarket, bakery and fuel. There is nothing commercial at Tata Beach itself, so stock up before you arrive.
Can I launch a kayak or boat at Tata Beach?
Kayaks, paddleboards and small craft go straight off the sand, which is one of the reasons the settlement is so popular with paddlers. For a trailer boat, use the sealed ramp at Tarakohe Harbour near Pōhara, about fifteen minutes away.
How do I get into the Abel Tasman from Tata Beach?
The northern trailhead at Wainui Bay is about fifteen minutes by road, and the Wainui Falls track is on the way. Water taxis and most track transport run from Mārahau at the southern end, which is an hour and a half back over Takaka Hill — so many guests take a kayak day trip from Tata instead.
