People who choose Collingwood are usually here for the far end of the Bay. Farewell Spit tours leave from the village, Wharariki Beach and the Cape Farewell seal colony are about forty-five minutes on, and the tracks through Milnthorpe Park are ten minutes back down the coast road. Walkers, birdwatchers, fishers and anyone who wants their phone to stop working for a week tend to book here — the reviews are almost always about quiet: hearing the tide turn, the stars, the kids fishing off the wharf.
The trade-off is distance. Pōhara and Tata Beach are about forty minutes away, so it pays to plan days around one end of Golden Bay at a time rather than criss-crossing it. Collingwood has a store and fuel, but the full supermarket shop is still in Tākaka, and a couple of our Collingwood houses look straight across the water — worth checking the outlook before you pick one, because the estuary view changes completely between tides.

Is Collingwood good for swimming?
Not in the way Pōhara or Tata Beach are. The village sits on a tidal inlet that drains to sandflats, so swimming is a high-tide activity here. For a proper beach day, Patons Rock and Parapara are fifteen and ten minutes back down the coast. Wharariki, up the far end, is spectacular but exposed and not a swimming beach.
Do I need to book a Farewell Spit tour in advance?
Yes, especially between December and February. Departures are tide-dependent, so the time moves day to day and seats are limited — book before you arrive and build the rest of that day around the departure time.
Is there mobile coverage out this way?
Patchy, and it depends on your network. Treat Wharariki Beach, Farewell Spit and the back roads toward the Aorere Valley as no-signal country: download offline maps before you leave the village. Our Collingwood homes have wifi, so you can still check in with the world from the deck.
