Pōhara is Golden Bay's main beach settlement: ten minutes east of Tākaka on Abel Tasman Drive, with a long north-facing beach, a campground at one end and Tarakohe Harbour around the point at the other. It has more holiday homes than anywhere else in the Bay, most of them a two- or three-minute walk from the sand. It is also the only place here where you can park the car on Friday and not touch it again until you leave.

Warm, sunny and well-located, this welcoming Pōhara holiday home is just a 2-minute walk to the beach and within easy reach of cafés, restaurants, and local amenities. This spacious dual-home retreat at Pōhara Beach offers the perfect setup for extended families, groups of friends, or multiple families holidaying together. With two self-contained homes on the same property, guests can enjoy plenty of space to relax, connect, and unwind while still having their own privacy.
Pōhara suits families and multi-generational groups better than anywhere else in Golden Bay — the biggest houses are here, the walk to the water is flat, and Tākaka's supermarket, bakery and cafés are a ten-minute drive rather than a half-hour expedition. Guests arrive with kids, bikes, boogie boards and often a dog, and the reviews say much the same three things every summer: they walked to the beach before breakfast, the tidal flats kept the little ones busy for hours, and they barely used the car.
It is also the closest holiday-home base to the northern end of the Abel Tasman. The Wainui Bay car park at the top of the Coast Track is about fifteen minutes further along the coast, the boat ramp at Tarakohe is just around the headland, and the Grove Scenic Reserve is a short detour on the way back into town. Plenty of the Pōhara homes take dogs, so filter for pets if yours is coming — and if you want a sea view rather than a beach walk, look at the houses set up on the hill behind the road.
About 10 km, or a 10-minute drive along Abel Tasman Drive. Tākaka has the only supermarket in Golden Bay, plus the pharmacy, petrol and most of the cafés, so it is worth doing one big shop on the way in.
Can you swim at Pōhara at low tide?
Yes, you just walk out further. Golden Bay has a large tidal range, so at low water the flats extend a long way and the shallows sit bath-warm through January and February. If you want deep water off the beach — or you are launching a boat — check a Tarakohe or Nelson tide chart and aim for the couple of hours either side of high tide.
Are dogs allowed on Pōhara Beach?
Many of our Pōhara homes are pet-friendly and the beach is a popular dog walk, but Tasman District Council applies seasonal and time-of-day rules to parts of it. Read the signs at the beach accesses, keep the dog on a lead near the campground end, and pick up after them on the reserve.
What is the drive in like?
Everyone comes over Takaka Hill on SH60 — roughly two hours from Nelson and a little over an hour from Motueka, on a sealed but tightly winding road that slows to a crawl behind campervans in summer. Allow more time than the map suggests, fill up before you cross, and expect the phone signal to drop out on the way.
