Pākawau is a quiet beach settlement on Golden Bay's northwest coast, about ten minutes past Collingwood toward Farewell Spit. There is no café strip and almost no through traffic — just a long sandy foreshore, tidal flats at low water, and houses that open straight onto the beach. Guests who book here usually want the far end of the Bay without staying right in the village.

The single-storey property features an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, with large windows overlooking the sea and sliding doors connecting the living space to the outdoor patio. Outside, guests can enjoy a spacious lawn, established gardens, outdoor seating, a sheltered swing seat and a barbecue area, with steps leading directly down to Pākawau Beach.
We look after a beachfront home at Pākawau with direct garden access to the sand and uninterrupted water views. It suits families and small groups who plan days around Farewell Spit tours, Wharariki Beach, and the quieter beaches west of Collingwood — then come home to a deck above the tide rather than a shared village foreshore.
Services sit back in Collingwood (fuel, store, tavern) or Tākaka (supermarket, pharmacy). Pack for self-catering, check tide times before a Spit day, and treat mobile coverage as patchy once you leave the main road. If you want village amenities on the doorstep instead, browse our Collingwood homes; for a busier beach base closer to Tākaka, start in Pōhara or Tata Beach.

Is Pākawau good for swimming?
It is a long sandy beach with a large tidal range, so swimming is best around high tide. At low water the flats stretch out a long way. For a more sheltered swimming bay closer to Tākaka, look at Tata Beach or Pōhara.
Can we visit Farewell Spit from Pākawau?
Yes — that is one of the main reasons guests stay here. Farewell Spit tours leave from Collingwood, about ten minutes back down the road. Book ahead in summer because departures are tide-dependent and seats are limited.
Do Pākawau homes take dogs?
Pet rules vary by property. Check the pets-welcome marker on each listing, and follow Tasman District Council beach rules while you are out — keep dogs under effective control and away from nesting wildlife on the inlet.
